But you should know going in that this is very much a pedal-oriented e-bike. In the end, the Specialized Turbo Levo SL Comp proved to be a tester favorite, offering a versatile downhill performance that feels "a lot like a regular trail bike". With 145mm of rear-wheel travel, 29-inch wheels, and a moderate but modern geometry, we found it to be a capable descender comfortable on a huge range of terrain. Both bikes' output settings can also be customized through the user-friendly Shimano e-Tube app so that you can dial in the feel and power to your exact preferences. See my full review of the Specialized Turbo Como SL here. Theres even an upgraded version known as the RadRunner Plus, which adds suspension, a seven-speed transmission, a more detailed display, and the passenger package, though the RadRunner Plus costs a bit more at $1,899. Plus you can capture all of your ride footage on the bike instead of bringing along a Go-Pro camera. Ive had three riders on the bike plenty of times, and it can definitely do more. Which EVs still qualify for US federal tax credit? The 800W motor is paired with a 7-speed drivetrain and offers speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h). The $1,949 Model Y is a step-through cruiser e-bike with a hidden battery in the front basket. The somewhat moderate trail riding geometry lends itself to responsive handling, while the power of the EP8 motor helps you blast up climbs once considered impossible. And, while we love the Maxxis Minion DHR II and Assegai tire combination, the EXO+ and EXO casings, respectively, are not quite beefy enough to handle the weight and charge-ability of the Spectral:ON. The belt-drive setup, low-weight design, and fast speed of up to 24 mph make this an incredible deal. Instead, we treated them all as if they were our own, putting them through the wringer to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This battery fits into the same amount of space as the 500Wh battery in the older models while adding only 2 lbs to the overall weight. See my first ride review of the Greyp T5 e-bike here. The build of the Comp alloy model we tested is mostly great for the price and contributes to its overall performance. But Im including it in the $2k-$3k category because youre going to want to add a couple of important accessories to this one. The $1,199 RadMission is the epitome of an affordable metro bike. Each bike's geometry, handling, and power output all played a role in how well these bikes performed on the ascents, and we had plenty of time to test them while rallying back uphill for more downhill laps. Each motor system and its associated controls are slightly different. Its not particularly fast at just 18 mph. The Levo SL is the lightest and proved to be the most nimble and agile by far, yet still managed to be confident and stable at speed. VanMoof is known for making elegant and techie e-bikes that are designed for commuters and urban navigators. It impressed us with its damp, ground-hugging feel, and it seemed eager to get up to speed. The RadRunner from Rad Power Bikes has been an industry favorite ever since it was first announced back in 2019. So if youre looking for a higher quality e-bike that doesnt cost as much as a fancy bike shop e-bike, this is the one to consider. And its also a pedal-assist e-bike, meaning you dont have a throttle for the days when you feel lazy. That is a little less than half of the regular Levo's output, and this difference is quite noticeable. Top subscription boxes right to your door, 1996-2022, Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. Oh yea, and the step-thru frame folds in half, too! Its a perfect commuter e-bike for someone that wants high quality parts like that German mid-drive motor, 9-speed Shimano transmission, hydraulic disc brakes, bright LED lights, built in fenders, rear rack, and a very comfortable saddle. Plus, I love that double center kickstand for creating an ultra-stable parking platform. This is thanks to Commencal's direct-to-consumer sales model. In the US, Class 1 electric bikes, the type tested and reviewed here, are limited to a top speed of 20 mph, and their motors are designed with a speed governor to regulate it. Serial 1 scored top e-bike designers from companies like Trek, so they know how to build an awesome bike with killer geometry. Near the top of the list though has got to be the dual batteries. But its a pretty evolving list these days. That said, there are probably some great customizable features of the display that we didn't fully examine. I love the $3,299 Priority Current electric bike so much that it has become one of my daily riders. You can see my full review of the Ariel Rider 52V X-Class here. Our team of testers has a strong background in the bike industry. It is important to note that all of these systems work pretty well; their differences are relatively subtle but noticeable. The dot matrix display is considered odd by some, by others prize its minimalism. The Turbo Levo SL doesn't pack the same punch as the full-power models but its lighter weight and middle-of-the-road geometry handle well on the climbs. The impressive performance comes from a powerful 1,000W motor that actually puts out closer to 2,000W of peak power. Parts like automatically engaging electric locks, 10-speed Shimano Deore transmissions, Magura MT5e quad-piston hydraulic disc brakes, and more set these e-bikes apart from the rest of the pack. Even when it falls just north of the $1k mark, the Roadster V2 is an awesome deal. Ive personally taken this e-bike back UP a downhill mountain bike course thats how powerful it is. You've gotta get up to get down, and one of the purposes of e-bikes is to make it much easier to do so. They start with bare frames and perform the entire build locally with highly trained e-bike technicians. That means the Roadster V2 is best for someone who enjoys cycling and simply wants an assist motor to help them go faster and farther. A 630Wh battery is also a nice touch, and the Meta Power TR has a pretty impressive distance range. While the controls are intuitive, their ergonomics weren't the best. Some are better than others GearLab is reader-supported. It took more effort on the part of the rider, but we were still impressed with the range regardless. Check out my full review of the Fuell Flluid here. How can we improve GearLab? The YT Decoy 29 is s uper versatile model that won't hold you back on the descents. With 150/160mm of travel, well-balanced weight, and responsive handling, the Levo can handle just about anything that comes down the trail with confidence and composure. The new SL 1.1 motor puts out a maximum of 35Nm of torque and 240 Watts of power. Check out my full review of the Priority Current here. Theres no suspension to speak of, but the upside is theres no suspension fork to break. The look is killer. This 29er has 140mm of travel with a 150mm fork and a seriously long and slack geometry. Full suspension and hydraulic disc brakes make this an e-bike that handles well at any speed, and the bright red paint job looks as aggressive as the e-bike feels. What you will find is modest power combined with urban-centric features. In this case, it straddles the line between an electric bike and an electric scooter. Riders who enjoy laying down their own power will find the added boost of the smooth but lighter power output to be just what they need to get up most climbs with ease. Theres also a nicely enclosed chain, which is a very nicer feature for urban riders that dont want to deal with chain lube on their pants or ankles. Material on GearLab is copyrighted. The head cups allow you to change the head tube angle a full degree at a time between 65.5 and 63.5-degrees while the flip chips adjust the bottom bracket height by 7mm between the high and low positions. If youre getting a Tern GSD, youre getting a fully qualified car replacement. The Shimano E7000 display, it may be small and somewhat hard to read, but it's far better than no display at all. We recommend doing some research about warranty coverage and buying from a knowledgeable local dealer whenever possible to ensure that you will be taken care of if problems should arise. The $1,999 Rad Power Bikes RadWagon 4 is one of my favorite options thanks to the awesome build and wide range of compatible Rad accessories. We were very impressed. Combined with a relatively low bottom bracket height means that bottoming out on the skid plate may occur in some situations. While the company has many models in the $1,000 to $2,000 range, the $1,095 Ride1Up Core-5 is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options. The Cafe Cruiser, as its name suggests, is part cruiser bike, part fast motorbike. Plus it comes in four color options. The SRAM Code R brakes that came on our test bike are adequate, but they quickly developed a spongy and inconsistent feel. In the market for the best new e-bike? It is important to note that adding a motor, battery, controls, wiring, and sensors to a mountain bike creates additional potential for these components to have issues or fail altogether. Less clearance due to motor/battery bulge. Again, the flip-chips were a nice feature to dial in the geometry to your preferences, and we generally found the high setting to be better for climbing and everyday trail riding. Climbing on an e-MTB with pedal assist support is somewhat different than climbing on a bike without a motor. The Specialized Turbo Levo Comp and the Turbo Levo SL score just a little lower in this rating due to the lack of a handlebar-mounted display. The Trek Rail 9.7 wasn't the most agile bike in the test, but it still performed well on the climbs. Overall though, the Specialized still proved to be the test team's favorite for its enhanced versatility through adjustable geometry, well-rounded performance, and very impressive range and efficiency. The adjustable geometry is a real highlight, giving the rider the ability to set the bike up in six distinct configurations through adjustable head cups and flip chips in the chainstays. Canyon's consumer-direct sales model also means they offer this bike at a very competitive price, relatively speaking, and we feel it is an excellent value. During testing, we analyzed each bike's design and build and rated them on their uphill and downhill performance, distance range, power output, and user-friendliness of the e-bike controls and interface. Range anxiety is pretty much a thing of the past as the Spectral:ON packs enough juice to make sure you run out of energy before it does. Its long and slack geometry is reminiscent of an enduro bike, and it felt great at speed and in rowdy terrain. No ads. The Decoy 29 also comes in two less expensive build options that are very well-equipped for the price. Becuase it doesnt have a throttle, youll need to enjoy pedaling in order to enjoy this e-bike. There are many places in the U.S. where you can legally and responsibly ride e-MTBs and take it from us; they are a heck of a lot of fun. Thats still a great bike, and well discuss it next, but the recently-released and more affordable $799 Lectric XP LITE is an even more wallet-friendly electric bike. And its electronics match that of a light e-bike too. The RadRunner is truly one of those do-anything e-bikes because it has so many uses. We tested this metric primarily based on feel instead of scientific measurement, and our testers could all notice the differences between the various models. You wont find giant tires or suspension or huge motors. Check out my in-depth review of the Juiced Scorpion X here. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The sub-$1,000 electric bike category is critical for a few reasons. This rock climber turned mountain cyclist loves huge rides covering obscene distances. Plus, the Lectric XP 2.0s folding frame means you can bring this high-value e-bike with you in a car or truck. This may not be a low-cost e-bike, but it definitely offers a ride that makes it worth it. Just real, honest, side-by-side testing and comparison. The full-power Turbo Levo Comp was our other favorite on the descents. The bench seat allows riders to scoot forward or backward to find the best seating position, and the tall bars give a fun cruiser/motorcycle feel to the bike. Theres a single battery option that starts at $2,299, but the dual battery option doubles the range up to a maximum of 100 miles. We had each tester ride each of the bikes numerous times, often riding the different models back to back for the sake of comparison. The Fuell Flluids smooth mid-drive motor, internally geared rear hub and Gates carbon belt drive setup combine to make an ultra-responsive and polished electric powertrain. He brings decades of bike testing expertise to the table and has an affinity for exploring remote places in the Lost Sierra aboard electric mountain bikes. Check out my full first ride on the various Serial 1 e-bike models here. To test this, we rode the bikes downhill a lot and took them down various terrain, from fast and flowing open trails to tight low-speed technical and everything in between. See my full review of the JackRabbit here. Accessories aside, the RadRover 6 Plus is an awesome ride and packs in some real value. Due to the Levo's adjustable geometry, however, this may not always be the case as its handling can be altered so dramatically. It's also pretty heavy at 53+ lbs, and it can feel like a bit of a handful at lower speeds and in tight spots on both the climbs and descents. That extra speed over most class 2 e-bikes can be quite useful when riding on the side of the road trying to reduce the number of times a car whizzes by you. Theres a peppy 500W motor and removable 500Wh battery. A powerful throttle lets you blast up to 20 mph, or engaging the pedal assist can take you even faster to 28 mph. Its not going to be the strongest hill climber, but it does get going quickly on flat and modestly hilly terrain. While it is impressive that they've managed to squeeze 900Wh of battery into the frame, the resulting bulge at the bottom of the downtube reduces clearance quite noticeably. Check out my full in-depth review of the Lectric XP 2.0 here, or the step-through version here. Its incredibly customizable to the point where youre virtually guaranteed to be able to create a truly one-of-a-kind electric bike if you wish. Its the one I grab when Im doing city riding and I know I want to be pedaling. The battery storage capacity is also a bit less than half at 320Wh, although you can add 160Wh with the optional Range Extender battery. This native New Englander started mountain biking in 1992. It may be expensive, but it saves you several thousand dollars compared to many European electric mountain bikes with similar components but a fraction of the power in the FREY. For years, the $999 Lectric XP 2.0 and its previous 1.0 predecessor reigned supreme in the budget electric bike category. While a lighter bike with less power output is the whole point of the Levo SL, it might not be the e-bike experience that many riders are looking for. The Range Extender battery fits into the bottle cage of the Levo SL adding 160Wh to the 320Wh internal battery. Want to go on long rides with lots of vert? The Tern GSD improves upon the Tern HSD with even more capability and even nicer components. Electric Bike Company Model Y quick specs: By the time you surpass the $2,000 dollar mark, youre starting to get into serious e-bikes with serious performance or build quality. The high performance 750W hub motor and 28 mph (45 km/h) top speed make it a blast for quick errand running and fun commutes. We logged 26.1 miles. Most drive unit systems offer several support settings that provide pedal assistance that amplifies the user's input to varying degrees. Once you bump up above the $1,000 limit, you start to see many more great options for e-bikes in a wide range of categories. Rad Power Bikes is also the largest electric bicycle company in North America, meaning youve got the backing of a solid service department and the peace of mind from knowing the company will be around for years to come. We scrutinized every aspect of each e-bike's performance. But youre not just paying for the H-D name on the side. Like all of Serial 1s e-bikes, its got a great design and ridability. The Rail's flip-chips also give the rider the ability to adjust the geometry to their terrain or preferences. It simply adds even more utility and turns an adventure bike into an adventure/hauling bike. Joshua has an excellent eye for the subtleties of a bicycle. The FREY EX Pro is a high-end electric mountain bike with crazy high power. With roughly half the power output and torque of the full-power models, it makes you work a fair bit harder on the climbs. The top tube-mounted display unit is also pretty cool, but we found its location difficult to see, and perhaps it was a little over-complicated for our taste. A powerful 750W continuous-rated motor gets the bike up to Class 3 speeds that will have you keeping up with traffic or even passing cars when they get bogged down in the city. Not only is it comfortable, but it is highly maneuverable with responsive handling for tackling whatever you may encounter on the trail. Over several months, our team of professional mountain bike testers rode each of the electric mountain bikes in our test selection on various trails and terrain in a range of weather conditions. When it comes to mid-drive electric bicycles, there simply isnt a better bang-for-your-buck option than the Lectric XPremium. The quick folding and light, compact design of the e-bike is the real winner here. At just $1,595, the Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser is priced way below fair market value, which makes this an absolute steal of a deal. We weren't too surprised by this and were actually relatively impressed, given the battery's smaller size. Mid-drive electric bikes arent cheap, but the price is definitely a fair one for this e-bike. We believe this is the most important functionality of a mountain bike, and therefore, gave it higher weighting than other test metrics. But with those 20-in wheels and bicycle seat, the JackRabbit rides much more like a small folding e-bike than an e-scooter. The color screen and leather accents on the seat and bar ends add to the classy look too! Basically, theres a lot to like here. When we finished, we recorded the distance and vertical gain that each model could complete and easily and objectively determined our winner. The CSC FT1000MD sounds like a motorcycle name because it comes from a company with motorcycle heritage. That said, it has a comfortable geometry and quick handling. It is impressively stable and ground-hugging on the descents, yet easy to maneuver and get off the ground. Check out my full review of the Ride1Up Prodigy here. The controls have good ergonomics, but the top tube integrated display in the form of LED lights just isn't as easy to read and interpret while riding, though admittedly, it works just fine. The 700Wh battery carries over from the previous version, and gives the bike a very impressive range, while the revised motor pumps out some serious torque with three customizable support settings. Some of our testers even claim that climbing is now nearly as fun as descending when you've got pedal assistance. Thats enough for 50 miles (80 km) of range on throttle-only riding or closer to 100 miles (160 km) of range with pedal assist. Through the thousands of miles at this point, weve gotten to know these e-bikes inside and out, top to bottom and front to back. Those are a lot of nice parts! The biggest benefit of the JackRabbit is that it is so simple that the lack of frills keeps the weight down to just 23 lb (10.5 kg)! Over the years, we've tested a variety of different electric bikes, including the best budget e-bikes, and our full review of the top electric bikes, giving us a broad spectrum of electric biking products to gain knowledge from. Commencal wasn't messing around when they designed the Meta Power TR, and this bike is definitely long and slack. The Commencal Meta Power TR Team scored relatively well in this metric, with a small digital display mounted by the stem. The new Shimano EP8 on the Decoy 29 works very well. These bikes are capable of carrying some serious speed uphill, changing the climbing dynamic with a much faster pace, often tossing finesse out the window in favor of power and momentum. An exception to this rule is the Turbo Levo SL Comp, a lower-powered and lighter-weight model that tips the scales at just 41 lbs and 10 oz. The Ride1Up Roadster V2 seems to hop back and forth in price from $995 to $1,095, depending on the time of year and current sale. Check out my full review of this incredibly powerful e-bike here. When outfitted with the Passenger Package, it has a seat and footpegs that let you carry kids or adults on the back, turning this into a multi-passenger e-bike. The Decoy's powerful Shimano EP8 motor is one factor, but its dialed trail riding geometry is another. Theres something for everyone. This bike is surprisingly nimble and lively given its weight, yet it remains super stable and confidence-inspiring at higher speeds and in steeper terrain. The new SL 1.1 motor is much smaller and puts out a max torque of 35Nm and up to 240 Watts of power. We test these e-bikes for countless hours on the trail along with head to head testing for direct comparison. You can send Micah tips at Micah@electrek.co, or find him on Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. While we like Specialized tires, the GRID Trail casings that come stock are simply not tough enough for the weight of this bike or its hard-charging capabilities. Theoretically, the larger the battery, the longer and farther you should be able to ride, but external variables like rider weight, pedaling input, terrain, trail conditions, and weather conditions may all affect the length of time or distance that a battery charge will last. The heavy weight of these bikes gives them incredible traction, keeping them planted on the ground, and compression dampening/climbing switches can be left wide open to enjoy the added traction benefits of active rear suspension. The Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser is Ride1Ups first non-purely commuter electric bike, and boy did they knock it out of the park on this one.
