or should I start playing about with the settings? One more thing worth buying is an e-bike specific chain. I had a look on the Cube website link and I couldnt find the bottom bracket type in the specification. I have just checked the spec on the 2010 Cube Stereo and it does appear to have a standard threaded Hollowtech II BB, with Shimano XT groupset. Ive had a good look at the specification of the tricycle, and I cant find any reference to the type of bottom bracket used. Is the BBS02 36V 500W motor more reliable?I dont abuse the motor and well aware of how one could overload it through wrong gearing etc. I hope this helps. I have problem fitting 52T because it would grind against the chainstay, thus difficult to put road cranks on mountain bike frames. So much so that it dumped my poor wife over the handlebars in the first few yards. Thanks Paul. Im finally thinking of pulling the trigger on a Schwinn Sidewinder MTB. The other option is to have a battery in a back pack. I did have an issue with the crank pedal threads stripping out (very soft material) but they have sent a replacement.. For instance, the bafang mid drive motor is very quiet, so youll be able to enjoy an almost noiseless ride whenever youre on your bafang 8fun mid drive ebike. Hi Tony,Great article which gives me lots to think about. Which one would you choose of the two? Hi Tony just an update, I fitted the Yose rear freewheel 26inch hub yesterday all was pretty straightforward, I had to drill the frame for the battery mount as the bottle holder holes didnt line up which was easy enough and the width of the motor is a little larger than the 138mm advertised I would say it is more like 140/142 but managed to get just enough play on the forks for it to fit in. You will pay more, but returning a faulty motor is usually more straightforward. Were sorry, this product is temporarily out of stock. Also the maximum current is set to 25A on the 36v 500w, I always drop this a little to 20-22A which gives a bit of a buffer zone. If I run into any issues Ill be sure to come and visit haha! Also use 2 part adhesive for the block sensors fitted to your brake levers. Your website is very usefull for me. Ngot du har koll p ? I have checked the spec on your bike, and it looks like it has a Shimano Hollowtech ll bottom bracket, so it should be compatible with the Bafang mid-drive motor. The other option would be to purchase from eBay or Amazon UK, they both have a certain degree of buyer protection, and it is easier to get a refund if a problem cant be resolved. Theres always good parts availability and I dont think Bafang are planning on replacing it anytime soon. Here is the link to the supplier I use (including battery options). You may find the chain will slip in the lower gears on full assist. Ive just dished out more than planned on motor and all the accessories. I have installed more BBS02 750w motors than any other (in excess of seventy units) and I have had ahigh rate of controller failure (17%). Maybe Im just beating a dead horse here and should just take out a mortgage for a new bike with a built in Yamaha unitAny info or thoughts would be very appreciated as Im stumped on what the right course is here. I usually use a Shimano, SRAM or KMC chain. I would keep the derailleur gears especially if youve got hills to climb, the Bafang transfers power through the drivetrain and having lower gearing for getting up the hills will help the motor spin faster and keep it cooler and more efficient. Specialized 2015 Rockhopper expert evo 650b https://www.specialized.com/co/en/rockhopper-expert-evo-650b/p/65475?color=&searchText=91215-2201. Riding an electric bike helped me to lose weight, get fit and reignite my passion for cycling! So a hub motor will be out of the question and a regular mid-drive like the bafang will require you get e BB30 to BSA adaptor. A factory built e-bike with a Bosch, Shimano or Yamaha motor would be more reliable and will come with a 2-year warranty, but even these go wrong from time to time, and theyre a lot more expensive to fix if they do go wrong (outside of warranty). Seems to ride really well although the first time I fired it up the throttle stopped responding at all (thought I had blown it up). I'm around 200lbs and 6'3" so i'm a big guy if you're lighter you can go faster. The downside is weight and initial cost. I have tried moving the sensor every which way you can, have you come across this before? I would recommend limiting the current to 20-22A as the motor still offers very strong performance in this range. Bosch-motorn r i allmnhet mycket mer tillfrlitlig p lng sikt, ven om pedalstdet inte kommer att vara lika starkt som med Bafang. I reduced the max current to 18A (using the USB and software) and lowered the start current on pedal assist from 20 to 10, I didnt have a throttle fitted, but if you do I would reduce the start current on the throttle down to 10 as well. If I use the thumb throttle there is no problem motor is working OK.Is there a possibility to solve the issue by myself? If you buy the USB programming lead and download the software, I would start by limiting the max current on the controller from 25A down to 18A, this will still give you peak power of over 800w, but be a lot kinder to the controller. I havent had any issues with the 48v 750w BBS02 this year so far. I have tested the 500w on a climb near me over 1.6km with average gradient of 10% (with 15-20% sections) and it handled it very well. Another issue is most tandems have an eccentric bottom bracket (for chain tension between front and rear). After about 16K miles on my BBS02 it started to make some noise. I have fitted a lot of BBS02s to full-suspension MTBs and this isnt usually a problem. The Jazz Gent should be a fairly straightforward conversion. Could I keep the weight of the bike around 20 kilos with the battery off? I checked the battery voltage and it was correct. Je trouve que 18A est encore beaucoup de puissance et rduire le courant serait mieux pour le moteur et llectricit long terme (si vous naviez pas besoin de la puissance supplmentaire). If youre going for longer rides then a 17Ah would be best. I am 300lb and have a heavy duty MTB bike for that reason but still thinking I just might not be able to keep the Bafang running for long. I am not sure what the amps are the voltage is topped at 54 it is a 20aH battery also I only get er 21 once in a while then the display shuts off. Luna Cycle have some pretty good 48v battery packs available and they might be able to custom-build one to fit in the frame. The only other thing I recommend is a good set of puncture resistant tyres Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are not only puncture resistant, but they are also rated for e-bike use. I can confirm that the kit is compatible with a Shimano 7-speed screw-on freewheel. Being a large bike with a rear rack this seems to be the best placement for the battery. Thank you for the very informative article and thank you in advance for your reply. But 48T front -11T rear with 26 inch wheel, you will not hit 35mph without help from gravity. Ive just installed the same kit on a Marin hybrid for a customer and I had the same issue with the battery. Es probable que sea necesario reemplazar el sensor de pasillo si el problema persiste. It would need to be something like a PF30 and you would need a PF30 to BSA adaptor. The only other issues I have come across on occasion is the motor lockring may need to be periodically tightened, and you may find fitting the battery to be a tight squeeze or the holes on the battery mounting plate will not align with the bottle cage bosses. You can opt to go with bigger chain ring in the front like 52T or even 58T but it'll suck at climbing and will be unstable for your chain. Hi Tony, about two months ago you gave me advice which I took about converting a bike. La nica empresa de conversin de bicicletas elctricas de Espaa con la que he tratado en el pasado es Ciclotek; podra valer la pena ponerse en contacto con ellos para ver si pueden ayudar. El sensor en s es muy barato, pero requiere habilidades para soldar y quitar la placa de circuito dentro del motor. Very much appreciated , I just ordered an aluminium frame to replace my carbon frame as I have lost a little faith in carbon as a material after my fork brokeI ordered the Octane One Prone 29 Frame 2019 size L.I`m starting on a project to build a commuter bike and light trail bike, so think the Octane should be perfect. The B model had upgraded MOSFETs in the controller, and the later models usually have a separate gearshift sensor connector coming off the motor and a connector for lights. My Bafang display has stopped working and I cant power on but I need a bit of guidance as all the tech terms go way over my head. Im a retired electromechanical engineer and want to plunge into converting a reasonably priced mountain bike. But this is just my experience with the bbso2. And in a spot that makes it vulnerable, IME. Good to know a chain wont be specific, I wanted to have a new one right off the bat. I am concerned about how little room I have in the area where it comes close to the chainstay. The Lekkie Bling ring is dished inwards a little to compensate for the offset, Ive used a 36t Lekkie in combination with a 9-speed 12-36 cassette before with no compromise in shifting quality. I have never had any issues with the motors that used 48v batteries. My new piece comes in a few days and in the meantime I got some light trail commuter tires that are about 12% more efficient according to strava. Lots to consider, so cool to have helpful good folk like you! Looking at the frame design I would say the battery is going to be a tight squeeze, have you taken into account it need to be slid forwards and upwards by a few cm to remove it. The Bafang BBS02B is designed to be compatible with bikes that use a BSA threaded bottom bracket. I still reckon a Bafang would be your best bet, if you fit a small front chainring like a 34/36t (Lekkie or PreciAlps) and have an 11-40 rear cassette youll be able to climb practically anything. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, let me know. ebikechoices is supported by its audience. As I mentioned the jerkiness at pedalling started right away as I installed the motor so this was the faulty ring from the factory maybe a situation that accurs very rarely. The 500c is a good little display, you can change the speed limit and PAS levels from the settings menu. I will have to watch the current to be sure my mind isn't fooling me. Thanks for you comment, glad you like the site. I agree with the assist levels, I reckon level 3 is the sweet spot for general riding and reasonable battery range. I have ordered one and cant wait to give my legs a bit of help on hills. The chainline will be slightly off, but if you get a Lekkie Bling Ring it will compensate. Or is there anything I can do in the programme so I can keep up with my bike? the 48V 750W bafang mid drive motor is with an integrated speed sensor, the item which is compatible with a 68-120mm bottom bracket ,has a rated power of 750w, a reduction ratio of 1:21.9 and a maximum torque of 160 N.m WILL provide the rider with great explosive force when starting the systerm. Ciao Tony sono un possessore di un bafang 36v 350watt montato su una rockrider 540st, quando mi alzo in piedi su i pedali per affrontare una salita scricchiola in maniera fastidiosa. I did convert an older Schwinn hybrid a couple of years back and it was a nice and easy job. Discussions related to motors other than hub motors. I mount my first bafang kit 2 weeks ago (BBS02 750W 48V). Also, Id check the gap between the magnet and sensor, it should ideally be no more than about 3-4mm. Ive converted a few 2017 Voodoo Bizangos (yellow ones) and generally they are very straightforward to convert. You shouldnt have any issues with an Alifine 8 as long as you fit a gearshift sensor. I also had the battery fly off and skid down the road once Forgot to lock it! Stay safe everyone! Hello Tony.It was interesting to read your article about Bafang BBS02. Thanks for your positive comments. I used to get around 80 miles from a 48v 17.5Ah battery with around 6000ft of elevation using low to medium assist, so it should be more than enough for half a day in the saddle. Looks absolutely amazing where you are. Note: As the voltage drops, so will the power. In the last couple of years I havent had one recorded failure of the 02, but have had two failures with the 01. It may not display this or other websites correctly. Thank you again for getting back to me and Ill update you on how things pan out. What speed would the BBSHD be capable of with a 48v 17ah battery, there are videos on youtube of bikes doing 45mph on the flat with this setup or would you need 52v,the rider is pedalling. Mine uses the default Luna reprogram and I've no wish to tinker. Having been born curious about how everything works, he spends his time taking things apart to put them back together, and shares what he finds out through writing. The only issues Ive experienced are 2 instances of creaking, both fixed by tightening the lock ring. Regarding chainring size, the 48t should be fine, as you live in a relatively flat area. Theyre super small and ultra programmable from the display itself and work with BBS01 through to BBSHD and can be easily programmed with wheel sizes, speed limits, battery voltage, assist levels 3, 6 or 9, poles before start (how quickly the motor engages) etc etc. The motor burns 400 mah/mile at 18-20 mph in PAS4 though, and the casing starts to get hot. The BBSHD is meant to be more reliable than the BBS02 due to better MOSFETs and better heat dissipation the controllers seem more durable but other problems like hall sensors and PAS sensors persist in some motors. Some of the colour displays can be problematic I find the black and white C965 display to be the most reliable, although the latest DP-C18 colour display seems to be pretty good (although most of these displays only allow for 5 levels of pedal assist). It is also possible there is a fault with the display. I have installed the Bafang BBS02 and BBSHD on the Giant Roam. I think based on what you say I will find a UK supplier, it will cist a little more no doubt but it could prove significantly less in the long run should I experience a warrenty issue.I suspect other individuals reading your blog are also facing this same dilemma.Kind regardsRoy. But it looks like it is inner hole, which rotates along the pedals, not just hole in the frame hmm. Is a BBS02 48v a good match with a Shimano Nexus 8. Need to regularly check its tight. Can be placed right next to the brake clamp on a 22mm bar on the left and can be operated with a thumb. Some carbon road bikes have a beefed-up area surrounding the bottom bracket, which can make installation difficult or even impossible. All in all took about 2 1/2 hours I didnt fit the brake levers or the throttle. Eurobike seemed cheaper but I really like the looks. Both motors should comfortably get you up long, gradual climbs without too much trouble, although both will start to struggle a bit on sustained 15%+ climbs and you will still need to add reasonable amount of effort. Ive used a BBSHD in very wet and muddy off-road conditions without any issues, heavy rain and riding through puddles and shallow water. El cable de conexin al motor es nuevo.Gracias.
