thinkpad usb-c dock gen 2 monitor not working

I am I run two external 4k displays along with the laptop screen itself on a Latitude5400 or 2020 13" 10th Gen MacBook Pro using just one USB-C connection. We have some fiber runs in our building, but there isnt enough runs to supply all my switch locations and a couple of the runs are too long for 10gig. Most of the docks I've come across thus far only list the port types on the docking station but doesn't clarify how many monitors can be supported by the dock itself. my experience of this , is that the 3 monitors is normalyl only 2 external and the laptops own monitor - had this issue recently with a lenovo model.Does it show as 3 available when you dont use the dock and plug 2 monitors into the laptop - or via the docking station does it even require drives (the dell ones we use do). This led me to think there's a problem with the HDMI port, so I tried the Type C display port on the dock and it still didn't work. I have the latest driver running on the laptop--checked multiple times. I'm only able to connect to a max of 2 external displays although the dock supports it. Laptop also must have TB3. Supports up to 2 independent displays via native display and 1 external monitor; supports external monitor via HDMI (up to 4096x2160@24Hz). Unless they encrypt the signal and only lenovo monitors can read it, doesnt seem likely, and as I say it has worked on occasion. Spoke to lenovo on the chat and they said I cannot return the dock as it works for what it is supposed to (power, LAN etc) but they dont guarantee compatibility with all monitors. There has to be something simple I'm overlooking.. I would try that. Have you tried updating the video driver on the laptop? (like msinfo). I have over 70 workstations that run triple monitors off of a type c dock. There has to be a technical explanation of why it's not working. I'm able to get all 4 displays online]. Passive dongle/cable would not work. found a day with a list so long. I had the same problem using the Type-C/Dock on my HP Dragonfly. The Type C port doesn't have any symbols around it, which makes me think it could be just a basic USB 2.0 480MBbps (since it's not indicated)--is it safe for me to make that assumption? Both are USB-C 3.2 and the laptop specs says it supports multiple monitors. Then back to black and I login to my work profile on the laptop screen. It probably boils down the laptop capabilities.
